Simulation Facilitator Elective

Overview

This program is a six month commitment that provides mentoring in simulation-based curriculum development and implementation. This mentorship is designed to enhance the participant’s expertise in the principles of simulation facilitation and debriefing.  The Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH) tool will be used to guide participants growth and development during observations and feedback.

Mentees are accepted according to the availability of mentors, with variable start/end times. Mentees will work closely with their paired mentor (selected from among the SASC Simulation Education Specialists and designated experienced SEW faculty) based on best-fit criteria using mentees stated interested. The applicant will commit on average 2 hrs./ week for 26 weeks with opportunity to be flexible based on variables that may include planning around simulation center course observations, facilitation days, scheduling, etc. Although supported by the Education Institute, this elective is not funded and therefore participation must be included in the applicant’s normal working schedule with approval from their immediate supervisor.

Goals

  1. To grow simulation users in the area of knowledge, confidence, and application, specific to facilitating simulation-based educational activities.
  2. To provide simulation users debriefing strategies that have been proven effective by experts in the simulation field.

Curriculum (High level description- will be further explored between the Mentor and Mentee once accepted)

  1. General Topics

a. Introduction to the Simulation and Advanced Skills Center processes & resources

b. Remaining curriculum to be determined based on individual’s goals and objectives

  1. Education Topics

a. Introduction to simulation curriculum development and implementation

b. Training in the fundamentals of debriefing

Qualifications

Any health profession degree is acceptable, and no clinical experience is required. High motivation to pursue introductory training in simulation-based healthcare education must be demonstrated.
